This is the page where the advice most often surprises people, so here it is up front: do not repair a MacBook screen before selling it. A genuine Apple display assembly is one of the priciest common repairs there is, frequently a substantial fraction of what the whole machine is worth used, and it will not add that much to a buyback offer.
A third-party panel is worse rather than better. It usually means a mismatched colour profile, sometimes no True Tone, and always a machine that a buyer can tell has been opened. An honest crack is a known quantity with a known cost. A cheap repair is an unknown one, and it prices accordingly.
So send it cracked. Tick the fault, get a number that already accounts for it, and keep the repair money.
Check these first.
Whether the glass cracked or the panel failed
Different faults, different prices. Cracked glass with a working image underneath is the cheaper version. Vertical lines, a black band, a spreading dark blot or a screen that stays dark with the machine clearly running are panel failures, and those cost more.
Flexgate, if it is an older MacBook Pro
A backlight that dies at certain hinge angles, or a stage-light effect along the bottom of the display, is a known fault on some 2016 to 2018 Pros. Describe the symptom rather than guessing the cause and we will price it correctly.
Whether it still drives an external display
Worth testing, because it separates a broken screen from a broken graphics chip, and those are very different numbers. Plug it into a monitor or a TV and see what happens.
Everything else still counts
Chip, RAM, storage, battery cycles and casing all price as normal. A cracked M3 Pro is worth considerably more than a pristine 2017 Air. The crack is a deduction from a number, not a replacement for it.
Things that do not disqualify it.
