Sell a Mac that will not turn on.
Try four things first, because a fair number of dead Macs are not. If it stays dead, it is still worth considerably more than nothing.
R0 million+ already paid out by Epic Deals
A Mac that will not power on is still a machine full of valuable, working parts. The display assembly alone, if it survived, is worth a meaningful amount, and so is the casing, the battery and often the board itself. That is why a dead Mac gets a price rather than a refusal.
But work through the checks below first, because a genuinely surprising share of dead MacBooks are a failed charger, a drained battery that needs longer than people give it, or a machine that needs its power management reset. A Mac that turns out to be alive is worth several times what a dead one is.
Whichever way it goes, do not pay for a diagnosis first. The fee plus any repair almost never returns what it cost on a machine you are about to sell, and a board somebody has already been inside is worth less than an untouched dead one.
Check these first.
Charge it for a full hour on a known-good charger
Not fifteen minutes. A deeply drained battery can show nothing at all for a long time, and MagSafe and USB-C chargers fail far more often than Macs do. Borrow one if you can, because this single step revives more machines than everything else here.
Listen and look for signs of life
A fan spinning, a chime, a faint backlight glow at an angle, or the keyboard lighting up all mean it is running and the display is the problem. That is a much better outcome and a much better price, so it is worth checking in a dark room.
Reset the SMC, or just leave it unplugged
On Apple Silicon, hold the power button for ten seconds, release, then press again. On older Intel Macs there is an SMC reset combination worth looking up for your model. Either way, leaving it disconnected overnight sometimes does the same job.
Try an external display
If a monitor shows the desktop, the Mac is alive and the fault is the screen or backlight. That splits a dead machine into a much more valuable one, and it costs you five minutes.
Things that do not disqualify it.
Every one of these lowers the offer. Not one of them ends it. Describe what it actually does and the price you are shown already accounts for it.
- No response at all to the power button
- Charger light does not come on
- Fan spins but the screen stays black
- Chimes then shuts down immediately
- Boot loop, or a folder with a question mark
- Turns on only when plugged in, never on battery
- Swollen battery lifting the trackpad or case
- Died suddenly with no drop or spill

Something else wrong with it?
Dead is still a number.
It will not be a large one, and it will be a real one.
